Love Stays

Haley Cavanagh

Summer 2026

In Autumn, we walked along the Thames,
sharing the warmth of crusty roasted almonds.

An older person's hand resting on top of another older person's hand.

In Autumn, we walked along the Thames,
sharing the warmth of crusty roasted almonds.
Beneath silvery London rain, we found each other’s light,
and suddenly my broken world became whole.

We dated like adults, with a mysterious familiarity
that caught me off guard.
He read me with ease—
as if my soul were his dog-eared book.

Two eighties kids raised a world apart.
So how—how was he able to fully unlock my heart?

He grew up nicely—supported and loved.
It never bothered him that I didn’t.
I’m okay on my own,
but my world explodes into brilliant color when he’s there.

Food tastes richer,

life takes on new meaning.

He saw something inside me,

in a way no one else ever had—
that told me this was good,

he was home, he was safe.

Life is funnier, brighter, better
with him by my side.

Decades have passed.
Our hair grays, knees ache,
and our children have grown.
The world has changed in unfathomable ways.

But love stays.
